Open PhD position in neutron scattering @ Uppsala University "Dynamics of wormlike micelles under shear"
22 Σεπτ. 2026Complex liquids have unique flow properties, displaying behaviours between classical solids and liquids due to their broad distribution of relaxation times. The viscoelastic properties can generally be connected to the microscopic picture of the structure and dynamics of the constituents. On the microscopic scale this information can be addressed by scattering methods. However, experiments addressing the dynamics of complex liquids under shear are very scarce and even the structure of very high molecular mass polymer melts is not well understood since the Weissenberg effect prevents rheological experiments. A specifically designed closed shear device offers unique possibilities to fill both gap.
The repation theory developed by DeGennes, Doi and Edwards during the 70's is very sucessful in predicting scaling laws for static polymers by assumming a reptative motion of the single chains confined by entanglements from the other chains. In this project we propose to investigate the dynamics of wormlike micelles, showing similarities to polymer melts with respect to the viscoelastice properties, under shear and complement our research on testing the predictions of extensions of the reptation theory, like convective constrain release or disentanglement for polymer melts.
The project may be broader than explained in the abstract. Wormlike micelles might be polymer systems in general etc. For the application I wanted something that is reasonable well defined but there is room for a candidate to explore the science area in a wider sense.
